The Catacombs are an underground ossuary that fills a renovated section of caverns and tunnels that are the remains of Paris’ stone mines. A dark descent down below and a long shadowy hallway take you to the city of the dead, where you will see the bones of over 6 million people. With the population of Paris on a steep rise throughout the 10th through 12th centuries, Parisians were unable to continue with individual burial sites in church cemeteries.
As a result, they turned to mass graves for the less wealthy. As the years went on, it became necessary to come up with a new plan for the burials. In 1786, Alexandre Lenoir and his successor, Thiroux de Crosne, began to transfer the bones from the mass graves into what is now the Catacombs. Originally, the catacombs were simply a bone repository, but in 1810, Louis-Étienne Héricart de Thury the rearrangement of the skulls and bones that decorate the Catacombs today.

The walk underground is approximately 45 minutes. It will take you down a long series of steps and ramps at the beginning, as well as a twisting spiral staircase back to the surface. Be wary of slippery stones as you walk around.
