Venice is one of those places that everyone is familiar with, its watery streets regularly feature in films and televisions shows but wandering around this magnificent city is another proposition entirely.

The city is formed out of 118 small islands in the center of the Venice Lagoon and linked by miles of waterways and narrow canals. Venice is not a large city and you can walk across it in an hour but it is a busy and interesting city, full of wonderful sites, sounds and smells.

Neighborhoods and Districts

The main neighborhoods in Venice are San Marco, Cannaregio, Castello, Santa Croce, San Polo and Dorsodura, these are where you will discover the biggest tourist attractions and spectacular sights. There are, however, other areas and islands nearby that are also worth a visit such as the cemetery island of San Michele, Murano, which is famous for its glass production, and Burano that has been noted for its colorful houses and lace making.

A short 10-minute boat ride will also take you across the Venice Lagoon to the narrow island of Lido di Venezia. This is where the film festival is held each year and where you will find a beautifully peaceful beach.

Who should use this itinerary?

The itinerary is designed to give first time visitors to Venice an insight into the museums, churches and significant sights of Venice. All three walks are laid out to take you easily around Venice's main tourist attractions but also leaves you with plenty of time to carry out your own journey of discovery around this wonderful city.

Due to Venice’s unique character there is just as much pleasure to be had simply walking around the little alleyways, into picturesque, deserted piazzas and across lonely bridges on an unfettered trip around the city. The guide provides a way of covering the main cultural, artisitic and architectural points of interest, giving you a feel for the city's layout, allowing you the confidence to conduct your own adventures into the back streets and sideways to discover your own personal Venice.
