Introduction - Walking Tours of Florence

Walking tours of Florence is a three-day guide that allows you to explore some of the wonder and beauty of the capital of the Renaissance. You will get to travel around the narrow Medieval streets and cross piazzas where film stars have trod or stand in the shadow of famous sculptures created by the art world’s leading lights. Florence is full of iconic images; most people will immediately recognize the striking image of Brunelleschi’s dome on the Cathedral, Giotto’s black and white striped tower or the incredible spectacle of the Ponte Vecchio straddling the River Arno.

The best way though to discover Florence is by getting lost, simply wandering its myriad of narrow cobbled streets, chancing upon hidden piazzas and taking in the sounds and smells of the city as you walk. At one minute you are amid a blaze of noise, color and people but simply turn a corner or go down an alleyway and everything quietens to a peaceful hum. There are so many memorable sights to find that it won’t be long until you uncover another gorgeous building or fascinating fountain.

Florence is a city large enough that it can be comfortably walked across at a steady pace in an afternoon but sufficiently interesting to hold the attention for a month. The amount of attractions tourists can uncover as they walk the streets is immense, so walking is probably the best way to thoroughly explore the center.

If, however, you prefer a more ordered approach these three walks will take in the main areas of the city and give you the ideal start to appreciating this marvelous tourist\ destination.

Things you’ll see in Florence:-

  1. Duomo
  2. Giotto’s Tower

  4. Ponte Vecchio

Neighborhoods and Districts

The main areas of interest in Florence are located in the old town center; here you will find the main tourist attractions such as the Duomo, Giotto’s Tower and the Uffizi. Venturing a little further out brings its own rewards as you explore the alleyways and intimate lanes on your tour but the greatest concentration of treasures are to be found in the city’s center. The Oltrano district south of the River Arno has a number of treasures too, as have the eastern area around Santa Croce and the market area of San Lorenzo, north of the Duomo.

Who should use this Itinerary?

This walking guide is ideally designed for small parties and family groups. Two of the walks are easy with one having a moderate climb halfway around (but the view is worth the effort.) It is aimed at people with little or no knowledge of Florence and will take you around the main points of interest and some off the beat track treats.

Art enthusiasts will find lots to tempt their fancy; Michelangelo, Donatello and Giotto are all easily found here. While lovers of architecture and street furniture; fountains, lampposts and light fittings will discover a host of gorgeous examples on every corner.

Film buffs are also in for a treat as a number of contemporary movies have used Florence as their backdrop. “Hannibal” with Sir Anthony Hopkins, “Tea with Mussolini” featuring Dame Judy Dench, Dame Maggie Smith, Cher and Lily Tomlin and “Room with a View” staring Maggie Smith and Helena Bonham-Carter are all worth watching before your visit.

Note should be made that many of the museums and churches charge for entering the cost can work out between €21 and €33 each day, depending on how many of buildings you wish to enter or if you want to scale Giotto's tower, the tower of the Palazzo Vecchio or dome in the Duomo.
