Little India

As you head down Serangoon Road you will be accosted with the sight of colorful silk saris, pungent spices and the blaring sounds of Bollywood music. This is Little India, without doubt the most unique of all Singapore’s city districts and has a refreshing rawness and energy like nowhere else. It is also the cheapest place to shop, eat and stay and a haven for local and visiting bargain hunters. On your left, Tekka Market is a frenetic, crowded place with market stalls packed high with exotic silk garments, spices, tacky artwork, fortune tellers and pretty much anything else you could think of. The ground floor is given over to the ‘wet market’ – amazing seafood such as lobster and shrimp, fresh meat and exotic fruit. This is one of the few places where you can seriously haggle for bargains. The opening price offered is always highly inflated so aim for at least a 50% discount. Directly opposite is the Little India Parade, a similar experience but in a more ‘civilized’ surroundings. It is a little touristy so expect higher prices.

On either side of Serangoon Road, dozens of small lanes are ripe for exploring. Just simply stroll at leisure. Each is packed with tiny grocery stalls stacked high with exotic foodstuffs, Bollywood music stores, cheap hostels, electronic retailers, antique sellers and best of all, a fantastic array of cheap hole in the wall Indian cafes. On Serangoon Road proper, you cannot help but notice the garish displays of gold jewelry here. This is Singapore’s main center for gold shopping. Firma Jewelers (107 Serangoon Road) has one of the best collections in town.

Midway along the main road is the elaborate 19th century Sri Veerama Kaliamman Hindu temple. It has an amazing tower filled with figurative sculptures of gods and mythological beasts. You will see strings of mango and coconut leaves hanging above the temple doors for good fortune and the interior is filled with sparkling gold adornments. Unlike many other places, there is no charge to take photographs.

The next major turning on the right (Syed Alwi Road) is a magnet for serious bargain hunters in Singapore. The famous Mustafa Center is a cheap and cheerful six story mall packed high with all manner of household goods, electronics and exotic foods. Just behind here is Desker Road, Little India’s red light district filled with a few sleazy café bars frequented by the city’s colorful transvestite community.

Little India never has the appearance of being overrun with tourists due to the large local Indian population and this is certainly the case at the Thieves’ Market. This sprawling flea market is located along Sungei Road and the Rocher Canal and is far removed from the air conditioned glitz of the mega malls of Orchard Road. This is the only place where people can literally set up a stall and sell without a license and anything goes here. In amongst a sea of kitsch and junk, you may even spot a priceless antique or two. This is one of the areas true hidden gems that few visiting tourists get to see. As you head back to the main street, try out some of the local delicacies at Banana Leaf Restaurant (48 Serangoon Road, hours 12:00 – 10:30pm www.thebananaleafapolo.com). This famous eatery has been around for over 30 years and offers huge portions of butter chicken, tandoori prawns and even fish head curry served on a banana leaf complete with unlimited rice, veggies and spicy dips. It is a real lunchtime bargain.
